How does laser tattoo removal work?
Laser tattoo removal works by utilizing photothermolysis to break down tattoo ink located in the dermal layer of the skin. In the past, tattoo removal involved highly destructive and non-selective methods like cryo-surgery and chemical destruction however now the advancements in laser technology have enabled tattoo removal to be faster and more effective than before.
Tattoos consist of ink particles injected into the superficial layer of the skin, which are then stored among immune cells in the dermis. These particles are too large to be naturally removed by the large white blood cells, however the Pico Second laser system produces highly efficient photon beams at various wavelengths to target different coloured pigments. These extremely short picosecond bursts of light energy penetrate the skin, breaking down the tattoo ink without harming the surrounding skin. Your body’s immune system then sends white blood cells to collect the excess ink particles and remove them for excretion.
Tattoo Removal Treatment Process
The Consultation
Our consultations are complimentary and obligation free!
This initial consultation lasts about 20-30 minutes, during which we will explain how tattoo removal works, assess your skin, assess the size, colour and location of your tattoo and assess suitability. We will address any questions you might have and if you decide to proceed with treatment on the same day, we can allocate sufficient time for that.
Pre Treatment
It is important to keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and ensure 50 SPF sunscreen is used for four weeks up until treatment. Sun effected skin can result in additional discomfort and slow the healing process. Most importantly avoid any direct sunlight for at least 48 hours prior.
We also recommend that if you smoke to limit or cease smoking for up to four weeks prior to treatment. Smoking causes decreased flow of oxygen and can delay the healing process.
Depending on where the tattoo is you wish to get removed, ensure the area has been shaved and ensure loose fitting clothing is worn on the day of treatment to avoid any rubbing or irritation after treatment.
During the treatment
The duration of your treatment will depend on the size of your tattoo. Small tattoos can be treated in as little as 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, while larger tattoos might require 10-15 minutes of laser time. Including preparation with the cooling machine and post-treatment bandaging, you can expect to spend around 15-20 minutes in the clinic for each session.
Anaesthetic cream can be applied to the tattoo prior to treatment (as discussed at consultation)
During the treatment, the tattoo will develop a white surface layer, indicating the process is working. This whitening is due to the breakdown of the tattoo pigment and will fade within a few hours. Immediately after the laser treatment, the surrounding skin may show redness and mild swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, with these symptoms potentially lasting for up to a week.
We use a specialized cooling machine to cool the area to minus 40°C during the procedure, ensuring optimal comfort.
After your treatment, we will apply an aftercare cream to the area and cover it with a loose dressing. It is then your responsibility to manage the treated area and promote healing through proper care. All clients will receive a detailed aftercare instruction sheet, and we are available to receive after hours calls if you have any post-care questions or concerns.
After treatment
- Apply Bepanthen Cream to the treated area at least twice a day for two weeks following the procedure.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for the first two weeks and use SPF 50+ sunscreen throughout the entire tattoo removal process.
- You can shower after 24 hours, but avoid prolonged water exposure and excessive heat for 48-72 hours post-treatment. This includes avoiding direct water pressure, exercise, swimming pools, and baths, as excess moisture can impede healing.
- Protect the area from injury.
- Refrain from scratching, picking, or touching the treated area and its surroundings.
- Avoid shaving over the area for the first three weeks to ensure the skin is fully healed.
- If discomfort persists, you may apply cold packs or a cool cloth.
Following these guidelines will help your skin heal effectively and improve the overall outcome of your tattoo removal process.
In most cases, your skin will return to its normal state after tattoo removal. However, if the tattoo has been covered up multiple times, the process may be more challenging. Some pigment lightening might occur, but this typically resolves with the skin's natural tanning process.
