Why chose us for your laser tattoo removal?

Leonidas Meditech is an advanced Pico-Second technology ensuring precise and effective tattoo removal of black and coloured tattoos as well as cosmetic tattoos. Our advanced technology Pico Second Laser is the safest way to perform your tattoo removal treatment and in conjunction with our advanced cooling machine, it assists in easing any discomfort throughout your laser removal procedure.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works by utilizing photothermolysis to break down tattoo ink located in the dermal layer of the skin. In the past, tattoo removal involved highly destructive and non-selective methods like cryo-surgery and chemical destruction however now the advancements in laser technology have enabled tattoo removal to be faster and more effective than before.

Tattoos consist of ink particles injected into the superficial layer of the skin, which are then stored among immune cells in the dermis. These particles are too large to be naturally removed by the large white blood cells, however the Pico Second laser system produces highly efficient photon beams at various wavelengths to target different coloured pigments. These extremely short picosecond bursts of light energy penetrate the skin, breaking down the tattoo ink without harming the surrounding skin. Your body’s immune system then sends white blood cells to collect the excess ink particles and remove them for excretion.

Tattoo Removal Treatment Process

The Consultation

Our consultations are complimentary and obligation free!

This initial consultation lasts about 20-30 minutes, during which we will explain how tattoo removal works, assess your skin, assess the size, colour and location of your tattoo and assess suitability. We will address any questions you might have and if you decide to proceed with treatment on the same day, we can allocate sufficient time for that.

Pre Treatment

It is important to keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and ensure 50 SPF sunscreen is used for four weeks up until treatment. Sun effected skin can result in additional discomfort and slow the healing process. Most importantly avoid any direct sunlight for at least 48 hours prior.

We also recommend that if you smoke to limit or cease smoking for up to four weeks prior to treatment. Smoking causes decreased flow of oxygen and can delay the healing process.

Depending on where the tattoo is you wish to get removed, ensure the area has been shaved and ensure loose fitting clothing is worn on the day of treatment to avoid any rubbing or irritation after treatment.

During the treatment

The duration of your treatment will depend on the size of your tattoo. Small tattoos can be treated in as little as 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, while larger tattoos might require 10-15 minutes of laser time. Including preparation with the cooling machine and post-treatment bandaging, you can expect to spend around 15-20 minutes in the clinic for each session.

Anaesthetic cream can be applied to the tattoo prior to treatment (as discussed at consultation)

During the treatment, the tattoo will develop a white surface layer, indicating the process is working. This whitening is due to the breakdown of the tattoo pigment and will fade within a few hours. Immediately after the laser treatment, the surrounding skin may show redness and mild swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, with these symptoms potentially lasting for up to a week.

We use a specialized cooling machine to cool the area to minus 40°C during the procedure, ensuring optimal comfort.

After your treatment, we will apply an aftercare cream to the area and cover it with a loose dressing. It is then your responsibility to manage the treated area and promote healing through proper care. All clients will receive a detailed aftercare instruction sheet, and we are available to receive after hours calls if you have any post-care questions or concerns.

After treatment

- Apply Bepanthen Cream to the treated area at least twice a day for two weeks following the procedure.

- Avoid direct sun exposure for the first two weeks and use SPF 50+ sunscreen throughout the entire tattoo removal process.

- You can shower after 24 hours, but avoid prolonged water exposure and excessive heat for 48-72 hours post-treatment. This includes avoiding direct water pressure, exercise, swimming pools, and baths, as excess moisture can impede healing.

- Protect the area from injury.

- Refrain from scratching, picking, or touching the treated area and its surroundings.

- Avoid shaving over the area for the first three weeks to ensure the skin is fully healed.

- If discomfort persists, you may apply cold packs or a cool cloth.

Following these guidelines will help your skin heal effectively and improve the overall outcome of your tattoo removal process.

In most cases, your skin will return to its normal state after tattoo removal. However, if the tattoo has been covered up multiple times, the process may be more challenging. Some pigment lightening might occur, but this typically resolves with the skin's natural tanning process.

Tattoo Removal FAQS

  • Am I suitable for Laser Tattoo Removal?

Unfortunately you are unable to have Laser Tattoo Removal if you are:

    • Pregnant
    • Using retinoids, Isotretinon (Roaccutane, Accutane, etc) –Must stop taking at least 6 months prior to treatment
    • Previous strong allergic reaction to the ink injection
    • Taking anticoagulants
    • Excessive skin bronzing/tanning
    • In a generally poor health condition
    • Wanting to treat an area that is in poor condition (abrasions, burnings etc)
    • Have an Autoimmune disease
    • Have a Coagulation disease

  • Is Tattoo Removal Painful?

Tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, and the pain level varies from person to person. Some might describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snap against the skin. At Coastal Aesthetics and Wellbeing Clinic, we prioritize minimizing discomfort through the use of the Zimmer, an advanced cooling system. The Zimmer delivers a continuous stream of air at -40 degrees Celsius to the treated area before, during, and after the procedure. This method effectively reduces pain and prevents thermal injury without disrupting the laser treatment, unlike other cooling techniques such as ice packs or contact cooling.

For those seeking additional pain relief, we offer optional anaesthetic creams, which can be purchased at your consultation appointment. Our goal is to ensure that clients experience minimal discomfort during their tattoo removal sessions.

  • Will my skin react to this treatment?

During treatment, your tattoo will develop a white surface layer, indicating the breakdown of tattoo pigment in response to the laser. This whitening will fade within a few hours. Immediately after the procedure, the surrounding skin may appear red and there could be a small amount of pinpoint bleeding. This sensation is often compared to a mild sunburn, with swelling and redness potentially lasting up to a week.

In the days following the treatment, you may experience some blistering, followed by the formation of a scab or thin crust. It's crucial to leave this undisturbed to avoid scarring. The skin will remain red for a few days to a couple of weeks as it begins to heal naturally.

These reactions are normal and part of the body's healing process following tattoo removal.

  • Why does my tattoo disappear and then reappear after treatment?

We understand that the laser tattoo removal process can seem a little bit confusing as during treatment there is frosting and then the tattoo reappears again!

What actually happens is when the laser beam targets the ink beneath the skin, the ink pigments heat up rapidly. This rapid heating causes a plasma to form, which is then released through the skin as a gas. This gas release causes the ink to turn white temporarily, creating the appearance of the tattoo disappearing and being replaced by "frosting."

Frosting is a common and harmless reaction, indicating that the laser has effectively targeted the ink and that your body is responding appropriately to the treatment. This frosting typically lasts for about 15-30 minutes after a session. As you undergo more sessions, you will notice less frosting since there will be less ink remaining under your skin.

This reaction is a normal part of the tattoo removal process and signals that the treatment is progressing as expected.

  • How long does it take to remove a tattoo?

At Coastal Aesthetic and Wellbeing we focus on authenticity and we provide open, honest and realistic conversations with our clients, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the number of laser tattoo removal sessions required.

Generally, the number of sessions needed depends on the size, ink colour, and depth of your tattoo. Typically, full removal requires 5-10 treatments, while lightening for a cover-up usually takes fewer sessions.

Tattoos previously treated with outdated machines or improper techniques may take longer to remove completely. This is because older lasers could have caused a reaction with the tattoo pigment, creating a "glue-like" effect in the deeper skin layers.

  • How Much Does Laser Tattoo Removal Cost?

The price of removing your tattoo will ultimately depend on its size and how many treatments it takes to reach your goal. During your free consultation, we’ll measure the size of your tattoo and determine the price per full treatment session.  Treatment of extra small tattoos start at $70 and this price increases as the size of the tattoo gets larger. There is no extra charge for multi-colour tattoos.

Please note, the displayed prices are estimates only. An initial consultation is mandatory for us to assess the amount of ink in your tattoo(s), your skin type, discuss suitability and provide you with a treatment plan. The assessment would also help determine how many treatment sessions will it take for you to achieve optimal results.

We also have maximum size limits on the overall skin area we can treat in a single session as healing and aftercare are extremely important. Client safety and well-being are our priorities.

  • Payment Plans

We believe that everyone should have accessibility to a high level service in our area. Therefore, at your initial consultation, we can discuss our Tattoo Removal Membership, which provides you with the opportunity to commence a customized weekly payment plan.

We also provide a Referral Program. Just refer a friend and when they are treated your friend receives 25% off their first treatment and you will also receive 25% off your next treatment.

    Great value!

  • Can I begin my next treatment earlier than 6 weeks?

Unfortunately not. Without waiting a minimum of 6 weeks you will not be allowing the body to naturally filter out the old, shattered particles of ink. The tattoo will not be removed any faster and may cause damage or scarring to the tissue especially if it has not been given enough time to properly heal. We recommend a minimum of 6 weeks with up to 8 weeks being appropriate for colour tattoos.

  • Do you treat cosmetic tattoos?

Yes. Cosmetic tattoo removal is a much more complex process. Our price starts at $120. Generally our clients can expect results in 2 – 6 treatments. However, it does depend on the ink, skin type and age of the tattoo and our initial consultation will provide opportunity to discuss your expected outcome and what you can expect post treatment

  • What colours fade best?

Dark (black) and red inks will lighten the best. Oranges and purples usually lighten over time, whereas blue, green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove and additional treatments are sometimes needed to produce significant fading. We treat all tattoos with the highest quality laser tattoo removal equipment available, allowing us to lighten all colours.

  • What happens the first 3 days after the treatment?

At this point, you might experience itching. Itching is an indication that the body is going through the healing process. It could also mean that blisters are busy forming. Regardless, resist the urge to itch and scratch on or around the treated skin.

Continue applying ice or cold compresses to the skin. Nurofen can aid with swelling and inflammation. You can also take Tylenol if you are experiencing pain.

Be disciplined in applying antiseptic cream and keeping the area clean and fresh. Even though the skin might feel tender or tingly, don’t fiddle with the bandage as it can irritate the skin.

Take note that tattoo removal blisters are a completely normal side effect. Try your best not to scratch or pop them as this could lead to infection.

  • What happens in the first week after treatment?

After the first three days, you can keep the bandage off to allow the treated skin to breathe.

You might still experience redness and swelling, and this is completely normal. Try your best not to bump or scratch the area as it will still be sensitive and not as protected without the bandage. Bumping the blisters can also result in them popping.

The fluid in the blister is there to protect and heal the skin. If the blisters pop, it can cause the skin on top to rip off if not properly taken care of. Allow the blisters to go down and dry out naturally and form scabs. The scabbing process is important to reduce the risk of bacteria entering and causing infection.

Do not pick off the scabs, as this could lead to scarring. Apply vitamin E oil to soothe the skin, and continue to apply an antibacterial ointment.

If the blisters are oozing a pus-like substance rather than a watery one, seek medical attention.

  • What happens from the second week onwards after treatment?

You can expect all your symptoms to become milder and milder with time.

You might notice the treated skin looking darker as the pigment rises to the surface of the skin. The area around it might lighten (hypopigmentation) or darken (hyperpigmentation) too. This is completely normal and will fade with time.

    Continue the aftercare as instructed.

  • Can I bring a friend or my kids to the appointment?

Moral support with a guest for your appointment is welcome however we ask that it is limited to one guest person only. We ask that no minors/children attend your appointment with us. We strive to create a peaceful atmosphere for all of our guests who come in after a long day, and we also care about the safety of everyone involved. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask.
